What is an Automobile?

The term automobile is a portmanteau of the two Latin elements movere and auto. It is a self-propelled motor vehicle used for passenger transportation, carrying goods and driving on roads. They are usually four-wheeled vehicles that seat one to eight passengers.

Modern automobiles have evolved from new technologies to improve safety. Manufacturers also improve the engines, chassis and control systems.

Automobiles have become an important lifeline for humans. Twenty million people depend on motorized vehicles for their livelihood. However, they can also be a source of air pollution.

In the 1960s, motor vehicles were identified as the leading contributor to the release of air pollutants in urban areas. Several manufacturers have attempted to reduce the emission of pollutants in their vehicles.

New technology and innovations have also contributed to the reduction of the automobile’s impact on the environment. For example, oxidation catalytic converters have been introduced to reduce emissions.

As a result of these measures, the fuel economy of automobiles improved from 1978 to 1980. The reduction was a combination of vehicle weight reduction and engine efficiencies.

Despite these changes, the automotive industry still consumes a large amount of raw materials. These include oil, coal, natural gas, steam, iron and steel. There is also a considerable amount of waste generated during manufacturing.

In addition, the scale of the operations is hard to ignore. During the 1970s, the automobile industry was the world’s largest industrial concern. Many experts estimate that around two million people were involved in producing cars.
